A Gymboree Journey

My son's journey with Gymboree Play & Music started at the age of 2 1/2 and shortly after his daddy passed away. He was enrolled to start preschool but had a real tough time with separation anxiety, partly being a normal thing for that age but intensified due to the loss of his dad. Preschool didn't work out but I knew it would be good for both of us to get involved in some sort of activity and I wanted him to have a group experience with a teacher/leader. Something that made things a little more difficult was that we do not live in a neighborhood so hasn't really had the experience of being with other kids and their parents on a regular basis. Gymboree Play was perfect. He got to have the experience of being with the other kids and instructor but with me there so he could slowly adjust to being in that setting. After going to the Columbia Maryland Gymboree for about 8 months Miss Shannon told me about and suggested we try the school skills class, which is a drop off class but you can stay and the kids can even see you through the window . It was perfect for us. It enables my son to get used to going into the class without me, but until he feels comfortable with being separated from me I can hang around and watch him through the window and he can see me and be reassured that even though I'm not in the class with him I am not far. The teachers are great also in helping with suggestions for me to help him and talking to my son to make him feel more comfortable. He still has an occasional rough day when I take him into the class where he doesn't want me to leave him but he has also had an equal if not more number of days where he has gone in by himself and had a great time. Gymboree has helped him to grow and helped us through a very difficult time. Words cannot express the feeling I get when I see him participating, laughing and playing in class and making friends.
