Finding a Voice

When Patrick was born, he wasn't breathing. It was the scariest moment of our lives. But the hospital staff was fantastic and things soon improved. As he got a little older, we noticed how quiet he was and how he never wanted to make eye contact with people. He would turn away. I think maybe he was a little overwhelmed by his chaotic entrance into the world. Patrick is blessed to be able to have dad stay at home with him. But he never really got to interact with any kids his age. And he still remained as quiet as can be. We worried if he would ever talk and ever interact with others. So for his first birthday, we got him a membership to Gymboree. At first he was unsure, as most one year olds would be. But each week he gained more confidence. He began using some familiar signs to express himself, "help", "more" and "thank you". And one day his language simply exploded! He found his voice. Each week, as he and his dad pull into the parking lot, he starts chanting, "Class! Class!" He interacts with others kids (as much as a 2 year old can!) and he learns more and more each time. Gymboree Play & Music has given our little boy confidence, the joy of learning and most importantly, his voice.
