I just came back from teaching the second week of Gymboree's Music classes. Our lesson plan this week is Totally 80's! As a Program Developer, Trainer and Teacher, there's nothing more rewarding than seeing the progress the little ones make in such a short amount of time. One of this week's favorite toddler activities was an 80's song titled "Da Da Da" by the group Trio. Everyone had so much fun chanting and exploring the song's crazy beginnin, "Uh huh, Uh huh, Uh huh Uh huh Uh hu"--What you do and and what you don't, what you will and what you won't, what you can and what you cant!" etc. It never ceases to amaze me how fascinated young children are with the sound of a simple pure tone melody played on the chimes. In this case it was notes f, f, and e--the melody pattern in "da da' da'. It's just right for children because it's just two notes, sung on a very familiar syllable, one that is often one of their first words--"da da"! The beauty of today's music activities for children was seeing how many little ones had actually started singing the pattern after exploring it last week! Not only did they sing it, but they sang it right on pitch to the surprise and amazement of their parents! What a joy it was to hear so many young children using their singing voices for the first time! Such moments really help us understand how musical development is like language development. Children understand much more than they can actually say-- or sing as is the case with songs. It's so exciting to see little ones progress from knowing a song to being able to produce small fragments of it at a time. The other rewarding part of teaching today's lesson was having parents tell me how much fun they had! They seemed to love going back to the 80's and reliving music that was popular when they were kids. So don't ' be surprised if you walk into your local Gymboree Play and Music center and see teachers and customers dressed in leg warmers, neon T-shirts, big hair and spiked bangs for Totally 80's week! It's all about how Gymboree Music makes musical learning active, playful and fun! Next stop on tour musical Journey after Totally 80's is --Broadway!
