Turning "I Can't" into "I Can"!

Tuesday, May 3, 2011 by Teacher Talk

As an instructor at Gymboree Play and Music, I have had the pleasure of witnessing tremendous growth in children's interest, cognitive development and physical abilities on a weekly basis. The Source Mall location is where I have the privilege of teaching play classes on Sundays. One of my students, Brian, has exemplified that with a loving and supportive foundation, there is nothing that he can't do. Three months ago, Brian was fearful of climbing the airlog or crawling into the zoo box. Over the months and through his parent's unending devotion commitment and dedication to his development, Brian has tackled his fear of climbing, jumping, and getting into a confined space. Needless to say, his parents are both incredibly supportive and have missed only 1 class in the 30+ weeks I've been teaching there.
This week's theme in our Play & Learn 6 classes is Ocean Adventures. I created a "clamshell" which the children would climb into using a Playall circle, which was then covered with a "shell" rock-a-round. Brian was the first child to volunteer to climb in and he was so happy when we opened the top of the "shell," and he stood up holding a GymBall "pearl.". He enjoyed this activity so much that he couldn't wait to try it again! I am a true believe in never having the word "can't" at Gymboree. I'm so honored to be a part of enabling children, like Brian, to challenge their bodies and minds as they turn the "I can't" into "I CAN!" And watch their enthusiasm as they do it again, and again! Thank you to all the parents, caretakers and children who make the experience of teaching the classes as enjoyable as they are!
