You’ve welcomed a little one into your family and are excited for them to recognize your face. But what can they actually see?
It can take up to 3 months for a baby to “focus” by using both eyes together. So, at times, their eyes may wander, cross or move randomly. By around 3 months they should be able to focus on faces and close objects (about 8 to 10 inches away), follow a moving object with their eyes, and begin to reach for things.
Depth perception – the ability to determine if objects are nearer or farther away than other objects – is not present at birth. It can take up to the 5th month for the eyes to work together to form a three-dimensional view and begin to see in depth.
Crawling helps build eye-hand-foot coordination. Crawling is an important development step to support a baby’s overall development, and should be encouraged over early walking.
Vision improves dramatically between 1 and 2 years of age, and children between 3 and 5 years with normal vision will see as well as an adult.
What does this have to do with bubbles? The floating bubbles promote vision tracking in the babies, and support eye-hand coordination in toddlers and preschoolers as they try to catch a bubble on their finger.
It’s why Gymboree Play & Music ends every Play & Learn class with Parachute Time, blowing Ooodles of bubbles, starting with our Babies class for non-mobile infants.
